BTL Qualifications — Build. Transform. Last.
BTL Foundation launches January 2027

BTL Qualifications

Reading introduces the philosophy. Foundation demonstrates understanding.

BTL Qualifications are for healthcare professionals, service leaders and improvement leads who want to demonstrate their understanding of the BTL philosophy — and, at Practitioner level, their capability to apply it — to the organisations they work with.

Knowledge matters. Demonstrated capability matters more.

Reading introduces the philosophy. Foundation demonstrates understanding. Practitioner demonstrates application. Each stage is distinct, and each is designed to carry weight with employers, commissioners and healthcare organisations in its own right.

Healthcare organisations face consistent pressure to demonstrate the value of what they build. The people best placed to help them are those who understand not just what good service design looks like, but why — and, at Practitioner level, who can apply that understanding systematically across different settings, challenges and teams.

BTL Qualifications create a recognised standard for that understanding and capability — comparable in structure and rigour to qualifications like PRINCE2, and grounded in a body of knowledge developed over thirty years of frontline healthcare practice.

Foundation launches January 2027. Practitioner follows as a progression pathway.

Foundation establishes the knowledge base and is the qualification currently open for priority registration. Practitioner develops the applied capability that builds on it, and Foundation is a prerequisite for Practitioner. Both credentials are issued by EFRM Consulting Ltd.

Capability to apply, not just describe.

The BTL qualification is built around 22 Foundation learning outcomes and 14 Practitioner outcomes, drawn directly from the body of knowledge. At Practitioner level, candidates work with extended healthcare scenarios modelled on real service design challenges.

Apply the philosophy upstream

Understand where BTL operates — the thinking that precedes method selection — and use it to shape how teams approach service design before a methodology is chosen.

Map and understand whole pathways

Conduct or facilitate a whole-pathway mapping process, identify gaps and bottlenecks invisible from within individual services, and design accordingly.

Design evaluation from the start

Build evaluation into service design before launch — including baseline data collection, outcome selection and an evidence timeline that anticipates future funding decisions.

Identify and address the future evidence problem

Recognise where future evidence risk exists in a service proposal and recommend the design decisions required to prevent it.

Build ownership, not compliance

Distinguish between genuine ownership and surface compliance, and design involvement processes that create the conditions for adoption before implementation begins.

Assess organisational readiness using EFRM

Use the Evidence Future Ready Model to assess capability across eight domains, identify development priorities and understand what it means for an organisation to be Evidence Future Ready.

Anyone responsible for designing, delivering or sustaining healthcare services.

The qualification is system-agnostic and applicable across healthcare settings internationally. It is designed for practitioners who are doing the work — not for those observing it from a distance.
